Fake Crypto Investment Sites: How to Report Them

Fake Crypto Investment Sites: How to Report Them

You found a fake crypto investment website, maybe because it took your money or because you spotted it before it could. Reporting it does more than you might think. Every report can get the site flagged in browsers, removed by its host or added to a regulator warning list. Here is where to report and what to include.

Why reporting a website matters

Scam sites rely on looking trustworthy. A browser warning, a missing advert or a regulator notice makes the next person stop. Reports also build the paper trail investigators use to link sites to the same group, which often runs dozens of copies at once.

Where to report the site

Your fraud centre FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Scamwatch
Financial regulator Your national regulator, which can add it to a warning list
Google Safe Browsing Report a phishing or scam page so Chrome can warn users
Microsoft Report unsafe sites so Edge and Bing can warn users
The domain registrar and host Found through a WHOIS lookup, using their abuse contact
Where you saw the ad Report the advert on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok or Google

What to include

  • ✗ The full website address, exactly as written
  • ✗ Screenshots of the homepage, deposit page and any licence claims
  • ✗ The date you visited or deposited
  • ✗ How you found it: advert, message, search result
  • ✗ Wallet addresses or payment details shown on the site
  • ✗ Your own losses, if any, with transaction hashes

Find the host and registrar

Use a free WHOIS lookup to see the registrar and the creation date of the domain. Many lookups also show the hosting provider. Each one has an abuse email or form. Write a short, factual message: the address, what the site claims, why it is fraudulent and any regulator warning you found. Keep it calm and clear.

Report the advert too

If an advert led you to the site, report the advert itself on the platform that showed it. Use the menu on the ad, choose scam or misleading, and add the website address. Ads are how these sites find most of their victims, so removing them cuts off the flow.

If you also lost money

  1. Call your bank about any card or bank payments.
  2. Report the theft to the police and keep the reference number.
  3. Contact the exchange you used to send crypto.
  4. File a complaint with ReclaimDC so your evidence is organised and reviewed.

What happens after you report

You may not hear back from every place you report to. That is normal. Hosts and registrars often act without replying, and browser warnings can appear within days. Check the site again after a week. If it is still running unchanged, report again to the host, and include any new evidence.

Watch for clones

Scam sites often come back under a new name with the same design. If you spot a copy, report it the same way. Mention that it looks identical to the earlier site, because that link helps investigators connect the operations.

Will reporting a site get my money back?

Not by itself, but it can protect others and support your claim.

Can I get in trouble for reporting a site?

No. Reporting honestly what you saw is safe and encouraged.

A short report you can copy

“The website at [address] claims to be a regulated crypto investment firm. It is not listed with [regulator], and [regulator] has published a warning about it on [date]. The site takes deposits in cryptocurrency and refuses withdrawals unless a fee is paid. Screenshots attached.” Short, factual messages like this are read faster than long ones.
