Right after a scam, victims are at their most hopeful and most vulnerable. That is when fake fund recovery agents appear. They promise to get your crypto back, sometimes within days, for a fee. This is called a crypto recovery scam, and it can double the damage. Here is how to spot one.
Ten red flags
- ✗ They contacted you first.
- ✗ They already know how much you lost.
- ✗ They guarantee a full or near full recovery.
- ✗ They want an upfront fee, especially in crypto or gift cards.
- ✗ They claim to be hackers who can break into the scam wallet.
- ✗ They say they work with the FBI, Interpol or a regulator.
- ✗ They send a fake letter or badge to prove it.
- ✗ They push you to act today.
- ✗ They ask for your seed phrase, passwords or remote access.
- ✗ They have no verifiable company address or registration.
What real help looks like
Government agencies such as the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud and the FTC ReportFraud do not charge victims to take reports, and they do not contact you out of the blue asking for fees. The FBI has publicly warned about people impersonating its agents to target scam victims.
A genuine case review is transparent. It explains what tracing can and cannot do, it never promises a result, and it never asks for access to your accounts. You should be able to find the company, its address and how it works before you share anything.
Contacted by someone offering to recover your money?
Report it to ReclaimDC before you pay anything.
If you already paid a recovery agent
- Stop all further payments, including any release or withdrawal fee they now demand.
- Save every message, invoice and wallet address.
- Report the recovery scam as a separate crime to your police and fraud centre.
- Tell your bank and the exchange you sent from.
- File a complaint with ReclaimDC so both losses are reviewed together.
Why it hurts so much
Recovery scams work because they offer hope at a moment of pain. Falling for one is not a sign of weakness. These groups study victims and use scripts tested on thousands of people. Talking to someone you trust before paying anyone is the single best protection.
Are all recovery companies scams?
No, but anyone who contacts you first, guarantees results or demands crypto fees should be avoided.
Can hackers really get my crypto back?
No. Nobody can hack a blockchain to reverse a payment.
Questions to ask anyone offering help
Before you share a single document, ask any service these questions and listen carefully to the answers. Where are you registered, and can I check that registration myself? Who contacted whom first? What exactly will you do with my information? What will you charge, and when? Can you show me what tracing can and cannot achieve? A real service answers calmly and in writing. A recovery scammer changes the subject, adds urgency or gets angry.
Tell people close to you
Recovery scammers often target the same person several times over months. Let a family member or friend know you were scammed and that you will not pay anyone to recover funds without talking to them first. That simple agreement has stopped many second losses.
Report the recovery scammer too
A fake recovery agent is a separate crime and deserves its own report. Include the name they used, the website, the phone numbers, the payment details and every message. Agencies such as the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) track these groups, and your report helps warn the next victim before they pay.
How they find you
Your details may come from the original scammers, who sell lists of victims. Or you may be spotted asking for help in public, in a Facebook group, under a YouTube video, on TikTok or in a Reddit thread. Paid search ads and fake reviews also push recovery services to the top of results for searches like “recover stolen crypto”.
